YADKIN STAR BAPTIST CHURCH
835 N. KOONTZ ROAD LEXINGTON, NC 27295
Yadkin Star Baptist Church was organized in 1876, in the community of Yadkin College located in the western part of Davidson County. The first place of pubic worship was said to be under “a big tree.” However, during inclement weather, parishioners traveled to each other’s homes to have Sunday Worship Service.
Families of the community consisted primarily of the Hoovers, Coles, Michaels, Myers, Hanes, and others all of whom were slaves.
The first Pastor was the Reverend Thorton Hairston. He often walked from Davie County to render services. Some Sundays he only received fifty cents. Reverend Hairston had a vision to lead his people. Land was purchased from Mr. Hanes and Ed Owens assumed the responsibility to build the first church. It was named “Yadkin Star Baptist Church.” The first body buried in the church cemetery was Maggie Hoover.
As the first building became frail, a second church was built in 1884 under the leadership of our second pastor, the Reverend Willie Stone. He served for nineteen years. Other great men of God served the Yadkin Star Baptist Church. The third pastor was the Reverend Leroy Winford, two years; the fourth and fifth pastors shared six years being that of the Reverend Baxter Mason and the Reverend Lanningham; the seventh pastors was the Reverend Amos Miller, three years; followed by our eighth pastor being that of the Reverend Hawkins, who served for twenty- five years until his death on May 14, 1949.
We were without a shepherd/pastor for approximately six months, and in October 1949, our ninth pastor began to serve in the person of the Reverend Willie Lee Wilson. We made great progress under his leadership. He organized the Trustee Board, senior Choir and formed the Willing Worker Cub. On June 26, 1959 the members voted to build a new sanctuary and thereby a Building Committee was formed. The committee consisted of A.R. Staplefoote, Chairman; Theodore Crump, Secretary; and other members were: Harvie Hoover, John Gilmer Hoover, and Baxter Hoover. On July 4, 1956 a groundbreaking service was held, and the first block was laid on July 21, 1956. During a period in time when we were without a church building to worship in, the Chestnut grove United Methodist Church gave us permission to worship in their sanctuary. On September 15, 1957, the basement to Yadkin Star Baptist Church was completed and we held our first service. It was Revival a.k.a. “Big Meeting.” The first service held in our new sanctuary was on September 20, 1959.
The Reverend Wilson served for more than forty years. Theodore Crump, Harvie Hoover, Rayvon Crump and Joseph Roberts were ordained as Deacons under his leadership. Service was held at 3:00 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month. At the request of Deaconess Mattie Woodberry, Reverend Wilson consented to begin bi-monthly worship service on the first and third Sundays. The Reverend Wilson died on October 14, 1991.
Two years lapsed and the sheepfold was without a pastor and on October 19, 1993, our tenth pastor began his pastor in the person of the Reverend Paul Mosley and the membership grew. Under his pastorate the eldest deacon, James Crump died and Ray White was ordained. Other projects realized during his tenure were the remodeling of the sanctuary and kitchen, paving the parking lot, construction of the outside storage facility. With the reorganization of the Young Adult Choir, Vacation Bible School and Children’s Church, our spiritual growth was enhanced. The Reverend Mosley resigned on March 16, 1996 after three years of service.
The Reverend Thomas Bosier was an Associate Minister of Yadkin Star Baptist Church and upon the vacancy of the pastorate was elected to lead the flock as the eleventh pastor. Upon ordination the Reverend Bosier was installed as pastor on November 23, 1997. He served until February 1, 2004 after six years and approximately three months of service.
After some lapse of sixteen months the church voted and God called the Reverend Dr. Timothy R. Williams to be the twelfth pastor/teacher of our congregation. Through his pastorate souls continue to get saved and disciples begin their followship, fellowship and friendship with Jesus Christ. Through his ministry elevations have been made into the Trustees Ministry by Philip Caldwell, Shanthony Moss, Stacey E. Young and Alvin Hoover. Subsequently Stacey E. Young has been ordained into the Deacon Ministry and Alvin Hoover has been called into the selfsame ministry. Sons in the preaching ministry has been birthed and answered by the Reverend M. Ray White and Reverend Stacey E. Young as Associate Ministers of our church. Other newborn ministries have been birthed and realized, namely New Members Class, The Star Publication, Lift Jesus Up Praise and Worship Service, FACEBOOK Ministry and Yadkin Star Baptist Church webpage. Continued upkeep and maintenance of our facilities are ever present through refurbishing the vestibule, the sanctuary, the fellowship hall. A new heating and air conditioning system, security camera, and a church bus has been purchased, obtained and utilized. We have enhanced our Missions Field and Evangelistic team efforts with cheerful and willing patronage.
God has shown His favor among and towards His people of the congregants of the Yadkin Star Baptist Church. We are indeed pressing and pursing to adhere to Jesus’ Words as found in Matthew 16:18 …upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. We stand firm to the words of the Apostle Paul to the church at Philippi stating in Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: We are standing on God’s Word faithfully knowing, believing and trusting Gods Word for ourselves as shared with the Church of Corinth in 1 Corinthians 2:9 …Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.
We are grateful to have witnessed the preaching and teachings of His servants, and all that the Lord has allowed us to accomplish in His name. To God be the glory for all the things He has done, is doing, and will do by faith.
